Wednesday January 19, 2022 | SELECTIVE MUTISM - Social isolation

When I was younger people would often tell me about Selective Mutism and that I was choosing not to speak or just refusing to speak.  I simply refused to believe people about that.  I wanted to find out about Selective Mutism but didn't know how to go about looking it up.  Back in the 80's there was no internet and no google search engine.  There was a library but I didn't know how to look it up in the library.  Still I refused to believe what people told me about Selective Mutism.  People kept telling me that I was refusing to speak and I kept getting angrier and angrier.  I was furious and frustrated but didn't know how to tell anyone my point of view.  That was the reason I was angry in the first place.   I knew that Selective Mutism was more than just not speaking.  It is an extreme anxiety disorder.  A little later, I decided to look up Selective Mutism and sure enough, it was an extreme anxiety disorder.

Selective Mutism is an extreme anxiety disorder where a person who is normally able to speak does not speak in specific situations or to specific people. It is only when we are comfortable that we can speak.

Above is a video of someone telling her experiences of her Selective Mutism and it's similar to my Selective Mutism.
