Saturday October 19, 2024 | Struggle with eye contact | Raising awareness of selective mutism

I struggle with eye contact the most. This may not be apparent to others now that I'm an adult. But back in the 80s, I struggled with eye contact. This is what people don't understand about selective mutism. I want people to understand that I do want to speak, but it's hard for me to get the words out. Just because selective mutism kicks in doesn't mean I don't want to speak. I really want to speak!
If I need help finding a product, I can try to make eye contact with a store associate, raise my hand slightly, say "excuse me" or "hello" politely, and clearly state that I need assistance with a specific product or question. If they are busy, I can wait patiently or ask if they can help me when they are available.

To get a store associate's attention, you can make eye contact, raise your hand slightly, say "excuse me" or "hello" politely, and clearly state that you need assistance with a specific product or question; if they are busy, you can wait patiently or ask if they can help you when they are available.
Key points to remember:
  • Be respectful and courteous: Always start with a friendly greeting and use polite language.
  • Make eye contact: This is a clear signal that you need help.
  • Use a clear voice: Speak clearly and concisely so the associate can understand your request.
  • Be specific: If you need help finding a product, mention the brand name or a key feature.
  • Be patient: If the associate is currently helping another customer, wait patiently or ask if they can assist you when they are available.

When asking a store associate where to find an item, a simple and polite approach is to say something like: "Excuse me, do you know where I can find the [item name]?"
Here are a few variations depending on the situation:
  • Specific question: "Do you know where the [specific brand/style] of [item name] is located?"
  • If you have a product number: "Could you point me in the direction of the [item name] with product number [number]?"
  • If you're unsure about the category: "I'm looking for [item name], is that in the [potential section] aisle?"
Key points to remember:
  • Be friendly and polite: Start with "Excuse me" or "Hello" and maintain a positive tone.
  • Be clear and concise: State the item name directly.
  • Ask for help if needed: If you're unsure about anything, don't hesitate to ask for further assistance.
  • Thank them: After they provide the information, say "Thank you" or "I appreciate it."
